The Social Assistance Probation Officers Department operates with the aim of supporting the implementation of community-based alternatives to imprisonment and carrying out social intervention measures within the criminal justice system. Its objectives are the social reintegration of offenders, the prevention of re offending, and the protection of social cohesion.

More specifically, the Athens Social Assistance Probation Officers Department is responsible for assisting and supervising individuals who are released on parole, whose sentence has been suspended under supervision, or who have been subjected to restrictive conditions imposed by a Court decision or by the Prosecutor responsible for the execution of sentences.

In addition, Social Assistance Probation Officers are responsible for supervising individuals who have been sentenced to, or whose sentence has subsequently been converted into, Community Service Work. Within this framework, they identify and secure placements for Community Service Work in designated agencies and organizations through the digital platform of the Ministry of Justice. They also submit recommendations to the competent Prosecutor regarding the conditions governing the performance of Community Service Work and supervise compliance with those conditions through individualized counseling and the assessment of social and personal factors.

To achieve these objectives, Social Assistance Probation Officers develop partnerships with competent public bodies, agencies, and support services, thereby facilitating effective rehabilitation and successful social reintegration.
